Competition and construction of an installation for the festival Kanal Playground in Brussel, Belgium

in cooperation with Willem Broekart

Competition 2013, construction 2014

O/S BXL will occupy the empty plot on Rue van Artevelde for one and a half year. The vertical playground as well an open stage (O/S) will create activity on this temporary unused plot. The vertical playground could be an ideal solution for our densely growing cities. First of all the installation is meant for the many children of Brussels who have no place in their neighborhood to play. Secondly the structure could become a meeting place, a stage and even a forum for everyone in the city.

The site in the heart of the city became a gap in the street after demolishing a building between two apartment houses. The installation placed at the back of the site appears suddenly, freeing a large square in front of the street.

In the installation we combine different elements forming a secure playground.

A large stair running from one end to an other of the structure like a tribune where people can listen and speak. On the ground level tables, seats and swings hang in a forest of strings creating a more intimate atmosphere. On the last floor there is a panorama terrace from where multitudes of hammock nets hang.
